Acting as general contractor for the housing development and self-performing the civil and underground works, SRM supported the creation of three new subdivisions complete with water and sewer services, road works, fire hydrants, hydro seeding, and lot development. In total, 33 homes were delivered through multiple qualified contractors, and they were able to bring community members back home within only a year’s time. “I think that was a great accomplishment,” David says. “We were able to pull everything together and complete the work and get everyone back into the community very quickly. Now they can work through plans for their permanent homes while living in very nice homes near their friends and neighbours, instead of scattered in hotel rooms.” That project also met important community objectives – approximately 45 per cent of spending went to member-owned businesses, and about half of the workforce was Indigenous, including many SteS band members who advanced into skilled and supervisory roles. David describes their work there as “a true showcase of communityled development – focused on capacity building, career development, mentorship, and strengthening local economies.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE CANADA
