incorporate every service they offer. That breadth of capability is one of the defining characteristics of the company – and one of the clearest reasons clients choose them. Rather than farming out large portions of a project, Davel brings the work in-house wherever possible. The team of six handles masonry, interlocking stone, retaining walls, driveways, framing, woodwork, drainage systems, softscaping, and even the roofing on their outdoor cabanas and structures. Only work that legally requires licensed tradespeople – plumbing, electrical, gas – goes to subcontractors, and those relationships have been carefully cultivated over many years. “We don’t sub out a lot of our work,” David says. “Most of what we do is in-house, and that means we can control the quality more efficiently than companies that are subbing out different parts. We’ve learned over the years that there are areas where subbing makes sense, and areas where you end up in a difficult position because their interests aren’t necessarily the same as yours.” According to David, that in-house capability is a big part of what sets Davel Construction apart. Another big part is their flexibility and adaptability – which is important, David explains, because large outdoor projects often involve a lot of changes to the scope midway through. “When it comes to big projects, there are a lot of changes, and a lot of things evolve. Once people start seeing the pool is done, they want to add this and add that. That takes a lot of managing and a lot of finessing – you have to be flexible and keep things moving.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE CANADA
