By 2006, David had moved to a small hardscaping company run by a high school acquaintance, where he broadened his skills considerably – learning staircases, retaining walls, pool surrounds, and more. That experience, combined with years of natural aptitude for working with his hands, gave him the foundation he needed. “As a kid, I was into arts and crafts and anything to do with building things with my hands,” he says. “And when I saw the guys doing it at that company, I realized I was good at it. I had a steady hand, good instincts for the work. That fed my desire to pursue it even further.” When David launched Davel Construction in 2012, his vision was clear from the outset. He wanted to do elaborate, comprehensive projects that incorporated every facet of outdoor construction – including retaining walls, outdoor fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, pool surrounds, planting, turf, trees. The kind of projects that “completely transform a property.” Over the years, that vision has only sharpened, shaped by the deliberate choice to take on challenging work. “My idea has always been that in order to grow and get better, you have to put yourself in uncomfortable situations and take on new challenges,” David explains. “I’ve spent the past 13 years learning new techniques, but also taking on the bread-and-butter jobs that keep the lights on and continue to develop different skills.” Today, Davel Construction’s project range runs from approximately $30,000 to $500,000, spanning straightforward driveways and back patios to complete property overhauls that JULY 2026
