Win-win relationships In addition to earning the trust and loyalty of their clients, Backyard Paradise by SunCo has invested deeply in their relationships with employees, subcontractors, and suppliers. When it comes to suppliers, for example, Roger says that he and his partners have built a culture grounded in Christian principles – an ethos of integrity, respect, and honesty that shapes how every relationship is managed. “We treat our vendors with respect, we pay our bills on time, and we work with integrity and honesty even if we’re on the losing end of that equation,” Roger says. “If I said it and I meant it, it’s going to happen regardless of the financial impact on our company.” Internally, the company employs roughly 27 full time team members. Roger says the company approaches those relationships the same way. For instance, many team members are young parents, and the company structures their workflow around the realities of family life – prioritizing safety, flexible scheduling, and an environment that allows people to go home at the end of the day to the families their work is supporting. The team gathers a few times a year for shared meals and informal celebrations, reinforcing a sense of community that goes beyond the job site. The relationships with subcontractors and suppliers are no less personal. Roger describes those partners not as vendors or coworkers, but simply as friends – people with whom conversations range from work to family, faith, and life. Conflicts arise occasionally, as they do in any relationship, but the company’s approach is always to work through them.
