The Construction Source

opportunity eventually arrived when Andrew’s employer acquired a property in Barrie initially intended for townhomes, but which the city wanted developed at a higher density. “He came to me immediately and said, ‘I think I have our first opportunity to do something together,’” Alex recalls. That project became the foundation of Brixen Developments. In the seven years since, the company has grown to just over 35 people, with teams covering construction, development, sales and marketing, and customer care all operating under one roof, with approximately three projects actively under construction at any given time. When it comes to choosing those projects, Alex says that he and Andrew always begin the evaluation process with the same important question. “’Is this an area that we would want to live in?’ That’s always the first thing we ask ourselves,” he explains. “Is there nearby transit? Are there local amenities? Do we feel like the general area is developing in a more urban environment where people are willing to live in a multi-res unit?” Once that initial box is checked, the team digs into current planning policies, assesses what density or zoning could be achieved, and where appropriate, will reach out directly to local councillors and municipal staff to validate their thinking.
