THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE CANADA Enjoying a challenge As previously mentioned, Borren Builders is currently working on an extremely high-performing custom house – which happens to be Dennis’ own home. That project has been long in the making. The process started with Dennis undergoing formal Passive House training that earned him certification as a Passive House tradesperson. From there, he connected with a certified Passive House designer at Bow Crow Design and began adapting a floor plan to suit both the certification requirements and the demands of central Alberta’s extreme climate – temperatures that swing from -40°C in winter to the mid-30s in summer. One of the more deliberate choices Dennis made was to build with insulated concrete forms (ICF) rather than the more complex wall systems common in passive construction. ICF has faced scepticism
