Allan describes that project as “really unique,” and says the building is designed to “respond to the architectural heritage of the neighbourhood.” Looking ahead, Allan says the vision for Bateman Development is to continue delivering those unique projects at a pace of about one per year. He is not interested in significantly expanding the business, but he has no interest in doing any less either. “I have no intention to retire,” he says. “I talked to one of my friends about retirement once and he said ‘You’ve been doing the same thing for almost 50 years. You must like it because you’ve been doing it so long, and you must be good at it because you’ve made a living. So why would you quit?’” Allan has taken that friend’s logic to heart. After more than four decades of building some of Ottawa’s most distinguished homes, he and his company show no signs of slowing down – and the city is better for it.
