their projects range in both size and typology, and their projects include everything from residential, commercial, and industrial development to major public infrastructure. On the larger size, the firm has contributed to high-profile transit expansions like the Broadway Subway Project in Vancouver, Hwy 1 (MOTT), and the Surrey–Langley SkyTrain extension. Geographically, Kontur travels all over British Columbia – “wherever our clients need us,” Matthew says. That provincial reach has brought the company into coastal, riverine, mountainous, and urban contexts, which all come with their own geotechnical challenges and hazards. The firm’s ability to adapt to those environments is tied directly to the depth of their leadership team. “Geotechnical engineering is very niche in terms of what some of those subsets are,” Matthew explains. “We have that depth of knowledge and experience, which allows us to facilitate projects on a large scale.” In addition to Matt and Yoshi, Kontur’s leadership team includes: Dave Silveria, principal; Shannon Davison, financial controller; Ryan Fenske, director of field and laboratory; and Marc Varty, director of marketing and business development. Between those leaders, the firm is armed with decades of experience in complementary specializations spanning geohazards, rock mechanics, foundation design, dike/embankment engineering, and more.
