“The client wanted to make the building as efficient as possible, and that’s what we did,” Kody says. “And they love the finished product. Everything functions perfectly well, the building is comfortable, and they love being in it.” According to Kody, commercial clients like that tend to choose Up To Kode due to their emphasis on quality. He admits that they are not the right choice for the customers who chasing the lowest price, but when it comes to quality, he doesn’t believe that many other companies can compete: “Most builders in this area are what I would call ‘trades managers,’” Kody explains. “They subcontract everything out. Not us. We try to do as much of the work as we can ourselves – from footings and foundations all the way to the finish. We try to minimize the amount of subtrades we use, just so we can maintain a really high level of control over the quality.” Up to Kode’s employees are highly trained and highly knowledgeable, Kody adds, and “it takes a long time to train them properly.” Because it takes so long, the company works hard to build strong relationships with employees in order to keep them around. Kody says it helps that the company does interesting work that people want to be a part of: “I’ve had some employees seek us out because they have heard we build start-to-finish,” he says, “and we do have a reputation for doing high quality work. There are carpenters out there who want to learn under us. They seek us out because they want that higher quality training, and they want to do more than just framing.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE CANADA
