almost 50 years in business – in fact, when it comes to their cottage work, he says they have some clients now who are the grandchildren of some of their original clients. “Either their granddad recommended us, or we did a job on the property 30 years ago, and now they’re coming back to us because it lasted so long and they want to make sure they get a good job again.” When it comes to their larger work, Larry says they have also built some longstanding relationships with local contractors and developers. Those relationships usually start with Hawk River building the roads for a development, and then about 50 per cent of the time, Larry says they will pick up the rest of the site work. He credits that loyalty not only to the company’s aforementioned points of difference – including their honesty, their convenience, and their efficiency – but also to the care that their team takes with every project. “We stress to our guys that they have to do the job as if they owned it,” Larry explains. “When they walk away, they have to ask themselves, ‘If I owned this, would I be happy?’ and the answer has to be ‘Yes.’” “So they have to make sure the site is neat and tidy,” he adds. “If they wouldn’t throw a cigarette butt in their own yard at home, they shouldn’t do it on a customer’s yard. The customer doesn’t want to come up and see that, and they don’t want to see a bunch of Tim Hortons coffee cups. When the customer shows up, the job has to be neat and tidy. When they give us the cheque, we don’t want them to have a bad taste in their mouth for any reason.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE CANADA
