Being a larger company with multiple offices and a sizable staff also enables PM Signs to work further afield than a lot of their competitors: “We have the ability to work outside the main Edmonton, Calgary, and Saskatoon core areas,” Jim explains. “If we have a project that’s three hours north or three hours south, we can take it on. We have the fleet and the manpower to get those projects done. A lot of our competitors don’t have that capability.” These days, as previously mentioned, PM Signs does a lot of large-scale projects for clients such as municipalities and property developers. At the same time, they still do a lot of smaller-scale projects. That’s another point of difference, Jim says: “We do a lot of large projects, but we don’t shy away from a small project. A lot of our competitors will focus on one or the other. They’ll tell customers ‘No, we don’t do that.’ But our feeling here is that any small project could eventually turn into something larger with that customer down the line.” Yet one more point of difference, Jim adds, is the speed at which PM Signs can work. He says that speed can be vital for many of their clients: “One of the first things I learned when I joined this industry is that if you’re starting a new business, one of the last things you think about is getting signage on your building,” he explains. “That’s often left to the last minute.” “A lot of companies come to us and say, ‘We need to have something up on our building in a couple weeks,’” he adds. “And we have the ability to help them. If everything is in place with permits, we have the ability manufacturing-wise and capacity-wise to provide a quick turnaround for them. That’s one of our strengths that, quite frankly, a lot of our competitors don’t have.” Over the years, PM Signs has been able to build some very longstanding relationships as a result of that strength – along with all their other strengths, including their geographic reach and the completeness of their service offering. As an example, Cody cites Gregg Distributors – he says PM Signs has been working with them since 2007 and they have done about 22 locations together.
