Harvey Russell, the company’s vice president and principal, says this is an especially exciting time in the Canadian real estate market and for NAI Advent as well. “Thousands and thousands of units are being built all over Canada. It’s a very growing industry. It’s a critical industry. There’s a housing crisis in Canada and the industry can’t keep up with demand. There’s just a huge, huge need for housing,” he says. “Twenty years ago, there were hardly any apartments being built in Canada. The numbers just didn’t work, but now they do.” With their location in Calgary, NAI Advent is in an opportune position to take advantage of the booming housing industry. “Calgary is the best market in Canada right now,” Harvey says. “The huge advantage that Calgary has is that it’s affordable.” He explains that building in Calgary is 60 percent less than in Toronto and 70 percent less than Vancouver. Harvey has been in the real estate business for 35 years and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his current leadership role with NAI Advent. Earlier in his career, he was an apartment broker, selling large apartment buildings with price tags from $5 million to $100 million. This was with the biggest commercial real estate company in the world. He says that during this time he “learned a lot about apartment buildings.” In 2002 he went to Toronto and was building condominiums for seven years.
