Contractors as a division served to supplement their civil capabilities.) Today, Schouten offers “allinclusive, surprise-free service” throughout Ontario, says Greg Slaa – who started with the company as an estimator roughly six years ago, and has seen the business grow by leaps and bounds in his time there. He credits that rapid growth in size and capability to the vision and determination of their founder and owner: “From the start, Calvin has been very proactive in going after what he wants. When he sees an opportunity, he goes after it and he proves he can do it. He’s never been afraid to go after that next bigger project. He’s never been afraid to level up. And when he secures the work, he makes sure he gets it done.” These days, Schouten does “quite the range of projects,” Greg says. When it comes to demolition, for example, they employ a number of crews that they can flexibly deploy, so they are still able to take on the kind of smaller residential demos they started out doing – but now they can also take on demos of larger buildings, such as schools and hospitals. On the civil side of the business, meanwhile, most of their projects are fairly large, with values typically ranging from $100,000 to over $6 million. On both sides of the business, when it comes to the smaller jobs, Schouten tends to stick close to their home base in Watford. For their larger jobs, they have the ability to venture all over Ontario. According to Greg, no matter the size of the project, clients tend to seek out Schouten for the same reasons. One of the main reasons is their reputation: DECEMBER 2023
