Imperial Welding Ltd. is a locally-owned, CWBcertified, and industry-leading structural steel fabrication and welding company that has served Vancouver Island since 1992. Based in Chemainus and Courtenay, they specialize in designing, fabricating, and erecting structural steel for commercial, industrial, and government projects, alongside providing retail steel sales. Over the years, they have developed an unrivalled depth of specialized expertise, as well as an enduring industry reputation for professionalism, quality, and safety. “With our knowledge and experience, it is our goal to attend to our clients’ needs, going above and beyond their expectations,” says Doug Hubscher, the company’s founder and president. “We have high standards of the quality of our work and strive for innovative ideas in structural steel.” Doug has personally been working with steel since a young age, when he was offered a job as a steel fabricator apprentice in high school. That early apprenticeship, which Doug took on after graduating high school in 1983, set the foundation for everything that followed. He spent four years earning his trade papers, then progressed from leading a shop floor to running field crews for another company. In 1992, when that company ran into financial trouble, he saw an opening. “I got together with a high school buddy and said, ‘Why don’t we just take this over and see if we can make a go of it?’” Doug recalls. “We were more just trying to survive, really. We went knocking on doors, met with a few general contractors, got a couple of projects, and got underway – went through the school of hard knocks.” The early years of Imperial Welding were built on MAY 2026
