The Construction Source

MARCH 2026 emerging engineers and researchers are equipped with current technical knowledge and best practices, further strengthening the industry for the future. Looking ahead, CGI-IGC aims to establish galvanized steel, backed by Canadian standards, as the benchmark for resilient, sustainable infrastructure. By fostering collaboration, supporting innovation, and promoting lowcarbon construction solutions, the institute is transforming how Canada designs, builds, and maintains its infrastructure. Hellen emphasizes that this initiative not only improves quality and sustainability but also strengthens domestic steel fabrication and ensures Canadian expertise is showcased globally. “The goal is to respond directly to industry needs,” Hellen says. “We want to set clear, actionable guidance for designers, galvanizers, and fabricators, and ensure that Canada is no longer reliant on outdated foreign standards. This is a historic moment for our infrastructure, for our steel industry, and for sustainable development in Canada.” Since its November launch, CGI-IGC has engaged stakeholders from across Canada, forming technical committees and initiating collaboration across the design, fabrication, and galvanizing sectors. With these groups now in place, the institute has begun advancing priority initiatives identified by members, including the development of Canadian-specific guides and standards aimed at improving durability, sustainability, and quality throughout the built environment.
