JULY 2026 Absolutely crucial Over the years, Habermehl Contracting has formed strong and lasting relationships with virtually all of their stakeholders, including their clients. The strength of those client relationships is reflected in the company’s rate of referrals and repeat business. “The lion’s share of our work comes from past clients,” Dwight says. “That means a lot to us. If our clients keep coming back, that shows that we’re focused on the right things.” The company enjoys similar loyalty internally. They generally employ 40-to-45 people throughout the year, and many of those employees are longstanding. Dwight credits that retention to the lessons passed on from his father. “My father was someone who really valued people. He had a real capacity to involve and draw people into the vision of a build.” Dwight carries that forward today, making it a priority that every team member understands the client’s vision and feels genuinely invested in bringing it to life. The company maintains an internal wage scale with incentive programs designed to reward excellent work and encourage longevity. As Dwight often says, quoting a phrase from the old Dofasco radio ads of his Ontario youth: “Our product is steel, but our strength is people.” Habermehl Contracting invests similar time and energy into their partnerships with subcontractors and supplier. Many of these relationships go back 25 years – practically as long as the company has operated in Nova Scotia. “Some of our subcontractors and suppliers have been with us for 25 years,” Dwight says. “They become part of the team. The relationships we have with them are absolutely crucial.”
