BLDG Workshop is an award-winning design firm based in Toronto and specializing in custom homes, cottages, and remodels and additions that relate to nature. Founder and architectural designer Nathan Buhler started the firm with the goal over 15 years ago with the goal of working with “great clients who appreciate great design,” and designing homes that responded to both the needs of those clients, as well as the needs of the land on which the home was built. “Our favorite projects are the projects where the site includes natural features that can become integral to the overall design,” Nathan explains. “We consider interior design, sustainability and landscape design as instrumental in our work as we approach projects holistically and in relationship to their context.” Nathan is a licensed BCIN designer, but he didn’t start his career in the design industry. Straight out of high school, he actually did “a bunch of theological training” and intended to become a church minister. After years of working oversees as a missionary with a Baptist church, however, he felt called to do pursue a more creative career, and he ended up going back to school for architectural technology. After graduating, he worked for a number of years with a high-end design firm before striking out on his own and starting BDLG Workshop in 2010. In the years since, the company has grown from a one-man operation run out of a spare bedroom in Nathan’s basement to a seven-person team – five working in architectural design and two focused on interior design.
