The company began in 2005 as the Big Hill Springs Gravel Pit, a small-scale operation on land originally mined by a local farmer. At that time, extraction was limited by regulation and scope, allowing only a few acres to be mined at a time. When the current owners acquired the site, they applied for expanded mining rights and converted it into a Class 1 gravel pit, dramatically increasing the scale of operations. Over the years, the pit has grown systematically, phase by phase, reflecting a careful balance between regulatory requirements and the growing demand for aggregate resources. Today, Hillstone is one of the largest aggregate producers near Calgary, serving a city that continues to expand outward and upward, with increasing need for reliable materials. Gustavo Rojas, the company’s sales manager since 2019, has played a pivotal role in shaping Hillstone’s growth trajectory and customer experience. Gustavo brings a strong engineering background from Venezuela, where he worked in industrial engineering and construction estimating, and he complements that experience with formal education in petroleum engineering after immigrating to Canada. He notes, “I come from a very hustling background where I have to grind to eat, so I decided this has potential to double the sales in no time. I went ahead and started moving pieces to start increasing the sales and making Hillstone one of the largest growth producers near the city.” Over the last few years, Hillstone has focused heavily on refining the experience they are delivering their clients.
