Unlike Manitoba, British Columbia requires builders to be licensed and educated, adding a layer of accountability that Marcus views as a positive step for the industry. “It creates more reliability and trust,” he says. “And trust is something this industry desperately needs.” After obtaining the necessary licensing, Black Diamond Homes completed their first BC project in early 2025: a 1,300-square-foot carriage home in Naramata overlooking Okanagan Lake. The project set the tone for the type of work the company plans to pursue moving forward – custom homes, thoughtfully designed, and deeply rooted in their surroundings. The carriage home was built on a five-acre mountainside property, with the client’s priorities centered on minimal environmental impact, energy efficiency, and maximizing views. The design began with orientation – positioning the structure to face the lake – followed by rooflines optimized for solar exposure. An L-shaped layout created a sheltered deck while allowing the southfacing roof to support an expansive solar array.
