Kontur is a Canadian employee owned, fullservice geotechnical engineering and consulting firm based in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. Since forming in 2018, they have grown and evolved steadily and significantly in terms of both size and service offering. When the firm began, they were just two partners working out of a garage. Today, the company employs a team of roughly 70 people, and they provide a full range of geotechnical services to owners, engineers, project managers and contractors across the public and private sectors. Despite their growth, however, they still provide the personal company service they did in the beginning. “We have the bench strength equivalent of some of the bigger players in our industry, but we’re not a big corporate conglomeration,” says Mathew Yip, the company’s CEO and one of the founders. “We operate as if we’re a smaller company. Our principal engineers are still the ones running the projects and working directly with clients. So, clients are getting the best of both worlds – they’re getting the service and the expertise.” Matthew is personally a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) and has over 20 years geotechnical engineering experience focused on materials testing, geotechnical explorations, characterizations, assessments, geological hazard evaluations, and geotechnical designs for various buildings, facilities, and infrastructure. His co-founder, J.Y. “Yoshi” Tanaka is similarly experienced and credentialed. Together, they started the firm in a garage in 2018. Since then, powered by their principals’ collective contacts and expertise, the firm has grown at a rapid rate. From the outset, Matthew says their goal was to build a sizable company and to a variety of work – and they have achieved that goal. These days, APRIL 2026
