The Construction Source

“Roland and I worked hard with the clients and the city to carve an appropriate built form that was contextual based on what was happening with the application to the north of us and potential real future development to the south of us,” Adrienne recalls. “It took us a while to massage the right built form of the site.” “Then when it came to the design of the building, we went through several iterations, and none were really hitting the mark for our client,” she continues. “Then they came to us with a sketch actually showing a series of arches on the main façade, incorporating this classical geometry and form in this mode modern application.” “So we actually took that sketch and started applying that to our model,” she says. “With some tweaks and adjustments, we came up with a really cool take on classical geometry while keeping it modern and clean with the materials that we ended up using.” From the beginning, the client was also clear that they wanted to building to “read more like a large house than a mid-rise building.” The team at RAW Design was able to achieve that look through their material selection, and by carefully calibrating the proportions of windows to masonry. Additionally, they included a large black door that spans almost two storeys – in Adrienne’s view, “that really brings the scale down and gives the building a more finer-grained, smaller-scale residential feel.” “I think we were pretty successful with that, and that was a true collaboration with the client,” she SEPTEMBER 2025
