subcontractors for the lowest possible price that they can do a job is looking after our clients’ best interest.” “If you grind somebody down to their lowest possible dollar, they won’t do the best quality work that they can do,” he elaborates. “They won’t want to come back and work for you again, and they won’t want to do good quality work because they’re not making any money. They’re losing money.” In his previous job, Jonathan had a conversation with a consultant that has always stuck with him in the years since. He recalls going back and forth over language from the contract, until the consultant came out and said ‘Do you want to play contract games or do you want to build stuff?’ “I said, ‘Well, I want to build stuff,’” Jonathan remembers. “He goes, ‘Okay, so let’s start from that premise. Let’s not play contract games and go back and forth and try to find specific wording in the contract that we can use to get one over on each other.’” That consultant went on to say that he understood that the client needed a good quality product for a reasonable price, and that everybody involved needed to make money on the project – if not, why would they be involved at all? However, he said, ‘Let’s be responsible about it. Let’s not play contract games. Let’s build stuff.’ “That’s why we named our company Marmot Builders, not Marmot Contracting or Marmot Contractors,” Jonathan says. “We don’t want to play contract games. We want to build stuff. We want to build a good quality product for a fair price.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE CANADA
