Do we need to find someone to fill in for you?’ We do that instead of saying ‘This is your job, show up, we don’t care that you’re not sleeping.’” At the same time, however, Jonathan allows that they can’t always be their employees’ friends. He emphasizes that quality is not something they will ever compromise for any reason. “At the end of the day, we need to make sure the quality of work is there, and we’re providing a good quality product to our client,” he says. “Sometimes we have to be critical. Sometimes we have to let people go. I often say to junior project managers that you aren’t doing somebody a favour by not telling them when they’re not performing. If you don’t ever give somebody constructive criticism, they’re never going to improve. But you can be human and have a measure of kindness and generosity in those criticisms.” “The biggest thing, I would say, is: don’t treat your employees like they’re a commodity,” Jonathan says in summation. “Treat them like they are people.” A lot of the same applies to the company’s relationships with subcontractors and tradespeople. On the whole, Jonathan describes those relationships as “amazing.” “I would say that our biggest thing with our subtrades is that we try to work with them. We try to be fair to them and to our clients.
