According to Jonathan, some of those relationships go back to the very beginning of Marmot Builders. Marmot Builders’ relationships with other stakeholders also tend to be longstanding. The company’s relationships with employees, for example, are very important to both Preston and Jonathan. When they started Marmot Builders, Jonathan says a key part of their vision was to create a company “where employees feel like the work and effort and sacrifice that they put in matters.” “There’s no secret formula to that,” Jonathan explains. “The biggest thing is showing up for the guys.” For example, if an employee is struggling, if their work seems to be slipping, their default reaction is not to dress them down or write them up. Instead, they prefer to approach them and have a conversation. “We ask them what’s going on, is everything okay at home? Is there anything we can help out with? It helps that we know them, we know their families. We might see a guy struggling a bit, but we also know that his baby is six months old. We have kids. We know he probably isn’t getting sleep.
