According to Sameer Mawji, executive vice president, the company’s enduring success is a result of the relationships they have built over the years with all their key stakeholders – including their material suppliers, their contractors, their employees, and especially their guests. “Our greatest assets are our relationships,” Sameer says. “A lot of those started with my father. As a family, we’ve always put a lot of emphasis and taken a lot of pride in the relationships we’ve curated over the years.” Sameer’s father, Shiraz ‘Sam’ Mawji, came from humble beginnings – he immigrated to Canada from Tanzania at 21 years old with just $500 to his name. He eventually began his journey in hospitality when he opened the very first international Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton January 1997. Later, he opened the Courtyard by Marriott at the Saskatoon Airport in December of 2014, which was the first in the Marriott property in the province of Saskatchewan. The following year, Sam suddenly past away, leaving his family to take over the company and continue his legacy. Sameer, for his part, was born and raised in Calgary, as was his brother. They both joined the family business at a young age. “We’ve been exposed to the hotel industry for the better part of our entire lives,” Sameer says. “We’ve known the hospitality business for a long time.” SEPTEMBER 2025
