Tom also credits the area’s abundance of lakes, natural green spaces, and year-round recreational activities such as hiking, boating, fishing, and skiing. The official community slogan for the township is “Seguin, the Natural Place to Be” – Tom believes people fleeing the big city end up settling in Seguin in pursuit of that nature. As previously mentioned, however, that growth comes at a price – “more people means more traffic,” Tom explains, “which means more damage to our roads, especially during the spring thaw.” “That’s a struggle that we’ve been dealing with for the past number of years,” he says. “In response, we’re reworking how we proceed moving forward in terms of road reconstruction and road maintenance. We’re trying some different approaches. We’re looking at some innovative solutions to help offset the spring thaws and damage to our roads.” As an example of the impact that climate and heavy use has made on their infrastructure – and as an example of Seguin Township’s response to it – Tom points to three bridge projects the township completed over the past few years. The largest of those bridges is called Structure 27, on the Rose Point Trail. The township first became aware of an issue there in 2021, when they conducted their regular biannual bridge inspection and determined it would need to be replaced within five years.
