Algonquin Highlands, a township known for its lakes, natural beauty, and close-knit communities, has seen significant growth and development under the leadership of Mayor Liz Danielsen. Since her election in 2022, Mayor Danielsen has been guiding projects that not only improve the township’s infrastructure but also enrich the lives of its residents. One of the most visible and meaningful undertakings during her term has been the renovation of the Dorset Recreation Center, a facility that has long served as the heart of the local community. The Dorset Recreation Center’s initial closure during the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by a closure for mold remediation, left a notable gap in the community. Although a part of the Algonquin Highlands as a whole, Mayor Danielsen calls Dorset “its own community,” and she says the absence of the center was a “real loss to that community.” Reopening the building has not only restored a vital social hub but also provided a renewed sense of pride and belonging for residents. Residents have responded enthusiastically to the updated facility. “People have been ecstatic about the building being back in use,” Mayor Danielsen says. Beyond functional upgrades, the rec center now boasts improved architectural design, accessible features, and even EV charging stations, reflecting both a commitment to inclusivity and forward-thinking environmental awareness. While the timber entryway initially drew some debate for its modern and unique design, the community is embracing the change, recognizing it as part of the building’s refreshed identity.
