TransAqua is the official public face, brand, and communication vehicle for the Greater Moncton Wastewater Commission—a New Brunswick organization dedicated to transforming wastewater it into clean water before it’s discharged into the Petitcodiac River. For residents of Moncton, Dieppe, and Riverview however, the brand represents far more than a utility—it embodies decades of community collaboration, environmental responsibility, and technical innovation. The Greater Moncton Wastewater Commission was originally formed in 1983 as a response to an urgent pollution crisis. In the years since, the commission has evolved into a sophisticated organization that treats an average of over 70 million liters of wastewater each day and cultivates strong relationships with nearly 137,000 citizens. Under General Manager Kevin Rice, TransAqua balances reliable operations with forward-thinking projects, ensuring that water quality and public trust remain paramount as the region evolves. The origins of TransAqua trace back to a time when raw sewage from three neighboring municipalities flowed untreated into the Petitcodiac River. “We were just dumping it,” Kevin says. The environmental and social consequences were immediate: foul odors, health concerns, and a once thriving river that no one could enjoy. Community pressure and advocacy by local environmental groups galvanized provincial leaders to form a joint commission. By 1983, TransAqua was born; the first treated flows passed through their early facilities in the 1990–91 timeframe, laying the groundwork for a regional utility governed by equal representation from Moncton, Riverview, and Dieppe.
