The Construction Source

JULY 2025 16-inch water main up a mountainside to one of the reservoirs that supplies the town. Jeff says he’s particularly proud of that project not just because of the successful result, but because of the way they proved people wrong. “After we won that, there were a lot of naysayers saying we came in too cheap and there was no way we could do it for that much,” he recalls. “And we just absolutely smashed it out of the park.” “It was a tonne of work, but we had a great crew with us. Everybody stepped up, and it went awesome,” he adds. “It wasn’t without challenges, but the easy projects don’t ever feel as good as the challenging ones, in my opinion.” Moving forward, Kays Contracting intends to continue taking on large and challenging projects, and to continue growing as a result. Jeff emphasizes, however, that their goal is not growth for growth’s sake. “Our goal for tomorrow is the same as our goal today – it’s to develop our people, maintain our high quality of work, and maintain the hustle and the initiative that we have built a reputation for,” Jeff says. “Those are the things that matter to us. We’ve never been focused on growing our revenue just for the sake of getting to a bigger number.” Despite not being focused on growth, Kays Contracting has grown a lot recently – Jeff estimates the company has tripled in size since he came aboard in 2019. He expects that growth to continue, just as a natural result of “focusing on the right things.” “The big thing that we always push for here is sustainable growth,” he concludes. “A big part of that is trying to invest in overhead when the time is right and trying to foresee when that time is right. I think the amount of thought and effort we’ve put into that has been a big part of the success. And I think it’s going to continue being a big part of our success.”
