to keep taking on “more intricate and difficult custom-type” jobs. “I really like doing custom work that most companies can’t do,” he says. “I like to fill that gap in the market.” “I’ve done a fair number of heritage restoration projects and I’ve really enjoyed them,” he adds. “I’d love to ultimately focus on stuff like that. I’ve always loved having to figure things out rather than just follow a standard plan.” As far as the size of the company is concerned, Glenn says there is room to grow, but he never wants to become a “major conglomerate with 40 or 50 guys.” He says getting to that size would be tricky, anyway, because he prefers not to work in the winter months, simply for quality reasons. “I don’t like to clear snow off to install a roof, because in my experience, those roofs just don’t last as long,” he explains. “That hinders my ability to grow, because it’s hard to find guys that are willing to sit back for two or three months and then come back every year. Usually they’ll go and find a job somewhere else.” It’s also difficult to find employees who care as much about quality and durability as Glenn – that also makes it difficult to grow too big, he says, because those are values he refuses to compromise on. “I’m probably going to be in Penticton for the rest of my life, so my reputation here means a lot to me,” he concludes. “And I’m not just worried about my reputation today; I’m worried about my reputation 10-to-20 years from now.
