The Construction Source

In recent years, the town has heard from a lot of seniors who want to downsize, but they can’t find anything in Mattawa that meets their needs, so they end up having to leave. Mayor Bélanger says they want that to change. They want to make sure housing is available that meets the needs of those seniors so they can stay in the community, and they also want housing that meets the needs of young families so they can join the community. “We have to make sure that we include all segments of society,” Mayor Bélanger emphasizes – and he is confident they are well on their way. In the near future, they have a plan to open up at least 101 new building lots. Some of those lots will be close to an acre and will accommodate estate homes, others will accommodate multi-unit properties such as townhomes. “At the end of the day, we’re looking to have between 200 and 300 more liveable units in the Town of Mattawa – which is huge,” Mayor Bélanger concludes. “That’s about one third of our town right now. So I think we’re definitely headed in the right direction. We’re going to keep moving in that direction.” AUGUST 2025
