Nestled in the serene landscapes of Ontario, Mattawa is a town with a rich history and an ambitious vision for the future. Under the leadership of Mayor Raymond Bélanger, and with the enthusiastic backing of council, Mattawa is undergoing a significant transformation – they have embarked on a long term strategic plan that involves the execution of multiple key infrastructure projects, all aligned with the goal of preparing the town for future growth. “As a town and a council, we’re committed to doing the right thing and bringing forward changes that will improve our community,” Mayor Bélanger says. “Right now we’re laying the foundation as we look to a more sustainable future.” Mayor Bélanger is a lifelong resident of Mattawa, and he has personally dedicated much of his life and career to the town’s development. At just 23 years old, he was elected to council, where he served two years. He then spent 30 years working with the town in various roles, holding positions in parks and recreation, tourism, public works, and with water and sewer. From 2015 to 2020 he served as the town’s Chief Administrative Officer. In 2022, he was elected Mayor after running on a platform of increasing housing and renewing and investing in the town’s infrastructure. “I love Mattawa – I call it God’s country – and I see great things for Mattawa,” he says. “I see the potential. That’s why I ran for Mayor. But in order to realize that potential, we need to grow our tax base. We need to get some people into the town. We need to attract them.” When Mayor Bélanger took office, the first thing he did was conduct a comprehensive review of the town’s existing policies and procedures, which AUGUST 2025
