As previously mentioned, Tracey believes the AEC industry in Canada to been unfortunately slow to adapt BIM technology like theirs, especially relative to other countries. “As global peers accelerate, Canada’s productivity metrics remain stagnant – a perplexing reality in a nation known for innovation,” he says. “Resistance isn’t due to lack of technology, but rather a leadership gap in recognizing its transformative power.” “It’s a bit of a paradox,” he continues. “The AEC industry doesn’t want to invest in the upskilling of their firms on speculation that BIM will be desired on most projects and so they do not advocate its use – and unsophisticated owners are ignorant of the possibilities because they have been taught to rely on the AEC industry for guidance.” “We believe this paradigm shift is inevitable. Whether motivated by energy efficiency, operational cost savings, or strategic asset management, Canadian owners will eventually embrace BIM – either by choice or by regulation. We need to be better.
