James admits that those projects are challenging, because they often come with budget and schedule restrictions – but he enjoys the challenge of navigating those constraints while still delivering high quality infrastructure. In almost all cases, he believes the key to overcoming those challenges is communication and collaboration, starting from very early on in the process. “Collaboration means ensuring that everyone is at the table and understands the decisions that are being made, and the impacts those decisions will have on the project,” he explains. “We go through a very thorough process just to make sure everything is understood, because every decision they make is going to have in impact. Every decision will have an impact on the cost and it will have an impact on the way the building is going to function. We make sure that we provide owners with that information.” Once they ensure owners have the information they need, James says that he and his team will make recommendations, but he stresses they are not there to impose their will on clients. He says they are there to serve the client’s vision, not their own.
