Kieran says they enjoy working at different scales, from renovations and additions to new custom homes, and they enjoy the process of working with homeowner clients. “For the owner, it’s usually a one-time investment,” he explains. “Meaning they will be very particular about certain details, - they’ll have a wish-list, they’ll have things that are very important to them. The expectations are very high. It’s a lot of hard work, but we enjoy the process.” Within the residential sector, the firm is also passionate about the mid-rise sector, and they always jump at the opportunity to contribute to projects that fill that much-talked-about “missing middle,” particularly within Toronto. “That typology is extremely interesting and complex,” Kieran says. “It involves a broad array of stakeholders. A lot of different consultants are involved in that size of a project. “We like working alongside engineers and other consultants – they are all extremely knowledgeable, making it an enriching process for all.” Architectural Instinct also has a commercial side – they have worked on restaurants, coffee shops, car dealerships, and recently a textile design and manufacturing studio. According to Facundo, they view architecture as holistic profession, and they have the tools to work on a variety of typologies. “We don’t shoehorn ourselves into one type,” he says.
