Room to grow Over the years, McLellan Contracting has grown steadily – though that growth has slowed since the onset of the pandemic, as the company made the purposeful decision to stay around the same size in order to “make sure our feet are in the right place,” according to John. Now that they are sure, he says that growth is resuming. “This will be a growth year for us,” he says. “We’re looking at a 10-to-15 per cent growth in revenue.” “We definitely have room to keep growing,” he adds. “Our reputation in the Durham region is so great, there’s no reason we couldn’t be the largest contractor here. The phone is always ringing off the hook; the opportunity is there – the only questions are just much we can take on, and how much should we take on? We’re figuring out those answers now.” At the same time, when it comes to the future, one thing John is sure of is he wants to operate and build more sustainably. That’s always been a passion of his. Currently, that’s reflected in their industry-certified efforts to recycle and divert waste from landfills, their use of electric vehicles, and their emphasis on buying locally as much as possible to minimize their environment footprint. “We’re trying to do our part to start reducing the environmental impact we make,” John concludes. “That’s something we’re very conscious of, and something we’re going to keep in mind when we make all our future decisions. Every year it becomes more important to us.” OCTOBER 2023
