Newly equipped with the perspective of a parent, he says “the sheer volume of waste that we were dealing with on all our projects just struck me so hard.” “I’d always known there was a lot of garbage on a job site,” he recalls, “but the volume of projects I was dealing with at the time meant that I had to manage so much more waste. I realized that this was not sustainable.” At that point, Dustin took parental leave and started searching for a solution. Drawing on his more than two decades of building experience, he collaborated with some industry leaders, and that process led to the creation of PLAEX. After several years of prototyping and lab testing – and after “knocking on a million doors” in search of funding – the company launched their first production facility in Dieppe, New Brunswick in the second half of 2022. In the time since, PLAEX has gotten involved with industry bodies and associations, both nationally and internationally. One of those bodies was the Solar Impulse Foundation, which is dedicated to addressing worldwide sustainability challenges while enabling economic growth. Late last year, they certified PLAEX as a “carbon negative” product, rather than a carbon-producing product. By their calculations, making a product with PLAEX is 138 per cent more efficient than making a similar product out of concrete. More recently, PLAEX fully delivered on their first project, which was a well cover assembled from their bricks. They are now about to start OCTOBER 2023
