The right fit Although Brownstone Estates still works primarily on spec, in recent years Cody has experimented more with building directly for clients. His first foray was a couple years ago, when his brother-in-law’s mother – someone he’d known since he was a kid – was looking for a new home and the home Brownstone currently had for sale was a little too big for her. “She asked if I would build the house that she wanted,” Cody recalls. “She was family, so I thought it would be safe to test the waters with her. And I had an unbelievable experience. She was great to work with. I did that home, and then I built for my brother-in-law, I’m building for my real estate agent right now, and for the first time I’m about to build a custom home for a client that I didn’t know before.” “So far so good,” he says. “I think the key is sitting down with the clients first and making sure it’s the right fit.
