where he ended up working for the same general contractor as Josh – in fact, they ended up working on the same office building project, Griffin as an engineer and Josh as a junior superintendent. From there, Griffin and Josh kept in touch. From their conversations, they understood that they both wanted to do something “a bit more meaningful” and “make more of a direct impact on people” than was possible in the large-scale commercial sector. Then they had their realization about the need for accessibility experts in construction. For Griffin, a big part of that realization was seeing his grandparents leave their home because it was no longer accessible for his grandmother. “They ended up moving into an assisted living home, which is extremely expensive to be in, for one,” Griffin says. “And when I visited, my grandfather didn’t waste any time showing me all the things that weren’t really accessible for my grandmother. Basically all they had was a wheel-in shower.” Around the same time, Josh was looking to transition from commercial building to residential building and to more meaningful work. He’s actually the one who approached Griffin with the idea to create an accessible renovation company: “It was kind of an odd aligning of the stars, considering the experience I just had with my grandparents,” Griffin recalls. “I was definitely interested right away. We talked to our wives, they said ‘Why not?’, and so we started it up.” AUGUST 2023
