The Construction Source

Shift Accessibility Contractors Ltd. is a general contracting company specializing in accessible and universal construction for homes and businesses throughout Calgary. They work directly with occupational therapists, homeowners, architects, and businesses to modify environments, making them accessible and more inclusive for people of all abilities. Co-founders and owners Griffin Simony and Josh Peill understand the difference that projects like theirs can make in the lives of their clients, and will therefore undertake everything from grab bar installations to full home remodels in order to make spaces that allow clients to “live independently, seek opportunity, and be included,” Griffin says. Griffin and Josh first founded the company in 2018. That’s when they realized that there was “a large gap” within the built environment, one that “segregates people with disabilities and seniors, and that the available solutions to these barriers are not enough.” “Once the switch was flipped, we couldn’t un-see it,” Griffin explains. “From noticing assisted living facilities that lacked accessibility for their residents, to friends and family members struggling to navigate their homes, we are aware of how spaces lack the adequate accessibility to make for an accessible and comfortable life.” Prior to starting a business together, Griffin came from a background in engineering and Josh came from a background in carpentry. Josh started off as a Red Seal carpenter who ended up working as a superintendent for a large commercial builder in Calgary. Griffin, meanwhile, has a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the Memorial University of Newfoundland, and part of that program involves doing co-operative work placements. He first came to Calgary on his final work placement before graduating, AUGUST 2023
