Increasing the productivity of land As a recent example of a project demonstrating what Southern Irrigation is capable of, Peter points to the Goosen Ranch in Kamloops. There, they are taking water from a nearby river and pushing it through four 250-horsepower pumps “essentially up the side of a mountain,” and under a major highway. They started that project this year and despite the inherent challenges it’s been going very well. “It’s a huge project,” Peter says. “We did a lot of the design work initially. It required a lot of engineering. It’s a massive undertaking. It shows what we can do.” And that’s just one project of many that Southern Irrigation had this year. Peter estimates the company worked on about 80 different turnkey projects in 2022 alone. Moving forward, Peter says that’s a pace they would love to maintain in Western Canada. He believes the opportunity will be there just because of how OCTOBER 2022
