Supply solutions

Crown Building Supplies, a BC based construction supply company, has been a trusted partner for contractors, and developers since 2014. They have built a reputation with their partner for helping keep projects within budget and deliver on time, even under “immense amount of pressure.” Gary Sangha, a founding partner and CEO, credits the professionalism of the team, management’s handson approach, and their transparency to the success of the business. He says that at every level of the organization – front desk, sales, warehouse, operations, accounting, and administration – all team members are dedicated to “providing reliable support at every stage of the construction process.” “Crown Building Supplies was built on the fundamental principle of exceptional customer service – with a team that delivers day in and day out. We hold an incredible amount of appreciation for our talented team, for it is their commitment and dedication to our clients at every touch point that has made our organization so successful.” Gary been a part of the construction supply industry for over 30 years. His goal for creating Crown Building Supplies was to be “different from our competitors.” “We wanted to create a one-stop-shop for builders, developers, architects and designers. We wanted to be a place where all those industry stakeholders could come and not only find the products they’re looking for, but find different solutions – and we wanted to give them a level of service that they couldn’t get anywhere else.” CROWN BUILDING SUPPLIES

That founding vision for Crown Building Supplies was quickly realized, and the rewards have been non-stop. For example, in 2015, the company was awarded the Surrey Business Excellence Award for ‘New Business of the Year’ by the Surrey Board of Trade. Since then, the business has grown at a steady rate, which has allowed them to add more product lines and increase their capacity as the years have gone on. Today, Crown Building Supplies specializes in wall and ceiling products including drywall, insulation, stucco, and steel studs. They are expanding into the flooring and cladding products as well. Their clients include not only the full range of building professionals, but also homeowners and DIYers. Crown Building Supplies has the capacity to service all of BC. No matter who their client is, and no matter where they are, Gary believes they choose Crown Building Supplies due to the company’s transparent and sincere customer service. “Good service is not just about getting the product to the project on time. That’s important, and we do that, but that’s not all. Good service is about all the communication that happens along the way. Good service is also about understanding the client.” Crown Building Supplies definitely understands their clients, due to the long working relationship with all. Gary estimates that 90 to 95 per cent of the company’s business comes from repeat clients. Those longstanding relationships also enable Crown Building Supplies to be flexible, and to react quickly when customers have emergencies. CROWN BUILDING SUPPLIES

“We know them on a personal basis. We know all their needs, all their wants. We understand them, and we tailor our service towards what they are looking for.” “If a customer is ever in a pickle and needs a last minute delivery, our strong relationships with all of our other customers allow us to adjust deliveries thus making it work. We’re very adaptable – we need to be, because construction is always evolving; circumstances on job sites are always changing. I think our customers really appreciate that about us.” Of course, clients also appreciate quality products – definitely something that Crown Building Supplies provides. Gary primarily credits that quality to the calibre of their manufacturing partners and suppliers. For example, one longstanding and trusted supplier is Johns Manville. They are an industryleading manufacturer of premium-quality insulation, commercial roofing, and fibers and nonwovens for commercial, industrial, and residential applications. They have a history in the construction industry going back 165 years, and since 2001 they have been a subsidiary of multinational conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway Inc. This gives them a strong financial foundation, as well as the backing to continuously innovative and optimize their portfolio of products. Their consistency of quality, and their reliability of supply, is what Crown Building Supplies looks for in all their supply partners. Gary also recognizes the entire team’s dedication, especially their delivery crews. Those crews understand the THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE CANADA

importance of what is at stake and work hard to get the products to clients safely and in great condition. “We don’t want anyone here to feel like they’re just a small piece of the company. Everyone here is important. Everyone is part of the solution. That’s how we truly feel and we ensure our employees understand and feel that.” Currently, Crown Building Suppliesemploysapproximately 90 team members. That number is growing with the added products and service lines. Although there are new faces, about 80 per cent have been with the company since it opened 9 years ago. Gary credits that longevity to several factors, including their efforts to promote from within. “Many employees who started in the warehouse have moved on to become estimators, or they lead multiple divisions within the company. We provide the training, the education – whatever they need to take the next steps to further their careers.” “We are continuously working to create and sustain a great working culture. We don’t like to use the words ‘corporate culture,’ because it’s not corporate. This is a familyowned business and we treat our employees like extended family. We care about them. We care about their families. We want them to look forward to coming to work in the morning. We want them to feel like they’re part of something.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE CANADA

Human beings first When it comes to all of Crown Building Supplies’ relationships – customers, employees, suppliers, manufacturers – the approach has always been the same. They look at everyone as “human beings first.” “We treat everyone the same. It doesn’t matter if it’s a supplier, an employee, or a customer. We treat them how we would like to be treated.” That approach may sound simple, but to some it can appear revolutionary. Gary recalls a story from a few years ago, when he was approached by a supplier at a trade show: “Gary, I was just talking about you. I was just chatting with my team about how the industry is so cutthroat, and wondered how does someone like Gary make it in this industry? He’s too nice.” Gary replied with: “Let me ask you a question. When you come to BC walk through Crown’s door, are you happy to CROWN BUILDING SUPPLIES

see me, or are you thinking that this is going to be a headache that you’d rather avoid at all costs?: The answer: “He was happy to see me.” “Being nice – some may see that as a weakness, but I see that as an advantage. Sooner or later, people realize that you’re a guy they want to work with. Then they’ll keep coming back.” The strength of the company’s relationships became particularly apparent during the height of the pandemic. While other companies were struggling with supply chain issues, Crown was able to keep their inventory relatively consistent. In part, it’s due to the large yard space which allows for significant stockpile. However, most importantly, because they have such strong relationships with suppliers. Moving forward, Crown Building Supplies’ goal: to continue fostering those strong relationships with suppliers, and to continue growing and expanding as a result. The company hase been growing consistently for almost 10 years now, and Gary assures, they still have plenty of room to get even bigger. “I think the sky is the limit, to be honest. Right now we’re in Surrey and Abbotsford. We want to grow throughout BC. We want to grow into neighboring provinces. The long-term dream is to grow cross-country.” There is a lot of potential for growth in the homeowner sector of construction supply market. In the early years, those customers accounted THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE CANADA

They now sit at roughly 10 per cent, and that percentage is growing. In order to accelerate that growth, CrownBuildingSuppliesrecently constructed a new showroom in Surrey, showcasing mockup walls, floors and ceilings. That showroom will also be geared towards architects and designers, as another goal of Crown Building Supplies is to become known as a trusted partner and source of information for those industry stakeholders. “We’re starting to target the designer and architectural community. We don’t just want to sell the product. We want to be a solution provider. We want architects and designers and even homeowners to be able to call us and we want to give them all the answers they are looking for. For example, if someone is going to make a basement suite, they should call us and tell us ‘We want to soundproof this wall.’ Then we can run them through the entire system and we can present them with all the different options and what they cost – because there are a lot of options when it comes to soundproofing.” “That’s how we’re going to set ourselves apart,” Gary concludes. “We’re focused to become more service based, and more knowledge based. We’re not just going to provide products; we’re going to provide solutions.” CROWN BUILDING SUPPLIES
