The Construction Source

that experience and expertise translated into results on site. He worked with Akman Construction on that project, but personally took full control of construction administration. Together, they finished the project one month early. Sotirios says that he’s just as hands-on when it comes to his client’s projects: “When I design something, I’m there from the beginning to the end,” he explains. “I’m there until the last silicone joint. I want it to be perfect.” Sotirios also believes that he’s set apart by his commitment to social issues. On Sherbrook Flats, for example, he demonstrated that commitment by incorporating affordable housing. On other projects, he also tries to do what he can to contribute to a “better, more just society.” “Architecture is a lever for social transformation,” he says. “It’s a big lever. That’s something we always keep in mind.” Sotirios personally has a lot of experience serving on the boards of non-profits. For example, he’s been the president of the Plug in Institute of Contemporary Art for about seven years, he recently completed nine years of service with the Winnipeg Symphony Architecture, he’s the board chair of Basilica Hudson in Hudson New York, and Anthology Film Archives in New York City. Sotirios is also an author – his book, Space Out, was edited by the great late architect Lebbeus Woods, and published by Springer Verlag and the Research Institute for Experimental Architecture in SOTIRIOS CORP Photo: James Brittain
