“Clients come in with a problem that needs solved. We listen and we pay attention to their concerns. We understand what their underlying passions are. If you talk with them and get to know them, then you can start to understand them as people. Then, you begin to understand what is really motivating them, which helps us to respond effectively to their problems or needs. When clients come in, we listen,” says Handy. Listening allows for Handy and his associates to serve a wide variety of clientele. Rather than focusing on a particular niche, the firm focuses on their clients and their needs. That means the firm takes on a variety of projects, including custom homes and college campuses restaurants. Regardless of the project, the firm always works to establish a personal relationship with a client built upon a strong foundation of trust. In doing so, Handy and his clients can then explore innovative options as projects progress and develop. Following graduation in 1976, Ted joined a firm in Calgary. He rose to Associate Partner as the firm grew to be one of Canada’s largest solely architectural firms until the 1980s, when the economic climate caused the firm hardship. Ted Handy then established his own firm in 1986, which was originally based in Toronto.
